The Middlemiss Family of New Zealand
By Act of Scottish Parliament in 1590 the Myddlemass family were recognised as a Border Clan with a Chief and were responsible with other Clans for the defence of the East Marches on the Scottish/English border. However, in 1603, the Border Clans were dispersed when the Crowns of Scotland and England became one, and clansmen dispersed to many parts of Britain. Typically, "Lucky" Middlemist was found in Edinburgh in the late eighteenth century as owner of a famous oyster cellar. Notable amongst the family at this time was Sir William Miyddilmist.
During the 17th century some families settled in Ireland and some clans and families moved to the European continent. And in 1679 George Middlemane (Middlemast) settled in Virginia, USA.
Andrew Middlemiss, son of Robert Bell Middlemiss (1818-1887) came to New Zealand in 1870, landing at Dunedin. Robert Bell Middlemiss came to N.Z. with his son Thomas and Margaret his wife and their three children in 1883 on the ship "TREVELYAN".
